Sithonia

The middle peninsula of Halkidiki: pine forest down to the sea, small coves and quiet villages from Nikiti to Sarti.

About

Sithonia is the middle of Halkidiki's three peninsulas, the one locals call the second leg. Its spine is Mount Itamos, 817 metres at the top, and the pine forest runs down the slopes almost to the water. Between the villages, the coast is a string of small bays.

Compared with Kassandra, next door to the west, Sithonia is less busy and less built up, with less traffic on the roads and, as a rule, better prices. The villages are quieter, but in our experience the evenings out are better too, in Nikiti and Neos Marmaras. If you would rather drive ten minutes to a cove and eat in a village taverna, this is the leg for you.

Who Sithonia suits

Families with small children, groups of friends and couples: Sithonia is our first suggestion for most of them. It works best if you hire a car: driving the whole loop takes three to four hours without stops, and summer buses link the main villages but do not reach many beaches.

The main villages

Nikiti is the gateway to the peninsula: an old stone village on the hill and a sandy beachfront below it, with a marina built in 2015. Most of our Sithonia villas are around it. About fifteen to twenty minutes further on the west coast, Neos Marmaras is the harbour town, with the Porto Carras estate next door. It has around 3,000 residents, and an estimated 20,000 people in summer.

On the east coast, Sarti looks across the water to Mount Athos, which you can see from the village beaches. North of it, Vourvourou is where people start a boat day around Diaporos island. In the south-west, Toroni has a 2.5 km beach with the ruins of the ancient city on its headland, and Porto Koufo, the largest natural harbour in Greece, is a few kilometres away. Kalamitsi, in the south-east, is a small village bay and the quietest of the group.

The beaches

Near Neos Marmaras, Kalogria and Lagomandra are long sandy beaches, and both carry a Blue Flag for 2026. So does Toroni. Akti Elia, between Neos Marmaras and Nikiti, is a long sandy beach among olive trees. In all, 19 beaches in the municipality of Sithonia are on the 2026 Blue Flag list, which is awarded against 33 criteria covering water quality, safety and facilities.

The wilder ones are on the east side. The Kavourotripes coast north of Sarti is about 5 km of small coves between white rocks, including Orange (Portokali) beach. The bigger coves have sunbeds, the smaller ones are a short walk from a dirt road, and early morning is the quiet time. Karydi, at Vourvourou, is white rock and shallow water. Neither is on the Blue Flag list. The Blue Lagoon on Diaporos can only be reached by boat.

When to go

The season runs from May to October, and July and August are the hottest and busiest months. Near Neos Marmaras the sea averages about 18°C in May, 23°C in June, 25 to 26°C in July and August, 24°C in September and 21°C in October, and daytime highs reach about 30°C in July. June and September give you warm water with fewer people and lower prices than the peak weeks.

Choosing a villa

Villa4You is a family business that has rented holiday homes in Greece since 2005, and our team is based in Halkidiki. Each Sithonia listing gives the number of guests, bedrooms and bathrooms, and where we have the data, the distance to the beach and whether there is a pool. Tell us your dates, group size and what matters most, whether that is a beach on foot, a pool or a quiet road, and we will send a shortlist.

Getting there

From Sithonia to the villas

Sithonia has no airport of its own. You fly into Thessaloniki (SKG) and drive south-east; no ferry is needed. It is the middle of the three legs, and Nikiti, at its northern end, is where the peninsula begins.

By car

The main road runs from the airport past Nea Moudania and along the coast to Nikiti. From there a single road circles the whole peninsula: down the west coast through Neos Marmaras and Toroni to Porto Koufo at the southern tip, and back up the east coast through Sarti and Vourvourou. The road is good but winding in the south, so allow more time than the distance suggests.

Typical drive times from the airport, without traffic: Nikiti about 1 hour 15, Neos Marmaras about 1 hour 30, Toroni about 1 hour 40 and Sarti about 1 hour 45. On Friday and Sunday afternoons in July and August, allow extra time on the road between Thessaloniki and Nea Moudania.

Private transfer

We can book a private transfer from the airport to your villa or hotel, with child seats on request. Prices for each village are in the table below.

By bus

There is no direct bus from the airport to Sithonia. Buses to the villages leave from the KTEL Chalkidikis station on the south-eastern edge of Thessaloniki. From the airport, take bus 01X to Aristotelous Square in the city centre, then city bus 45 to the KTEL station. The fare to Neos Marmaras is around 15 euros. Check times and prices with KTEL Chalkidikis before you travel.

Private transfer prices per vehicle with Thessaloniki Airport Transfers, tolls and VAT included. Times are from the airport in normal traffic.

Good to know

Sithonia: questions guests ask

Choose Sithonia for most villa holidays, and especially for families with small children and for groups. It is less busy than Kassandra, with less traffic, quieter villages and usually better prices, and in our experience the nightlife is better too. Kassandra is closer to the airport and has more organised beaches.
