Kassandra · Halkidiki

Kassandra

The first peninsula - vibrant resorts, sandy beaches and lively nightlife.

About

Kassandra is the first of Halkidiki's three peninsulas and the closest to Thessaloniki airport. It has long sandy beaches, organised beach bars and the busiest resorts in Halkidiki.

Kassandra or Sithonia?

They are two different holidays. Kassandra is busier and more organised: sandy beaches with sunbeds and beach bars, water sports, tavernas and shops within a short walk of most villages, and more traffic on the roads in July and August. Sithonia is greener and less busy, with small coves, pine forest down to the sea, quieter villages and, in our experience, better prices and better nightlife.

Kassandra suits people who want everything within a short walk, and its east coast has gentle sandy beaches such as Hanioti, which deepens gradually. Kallithea, Hanioti, Pefkochori and Skala Fourkas stay awake after midnight. For quiet, pick the village with care: Afytos and Nea Skioni are the calmer choices. For families with small children and for groups, we usually suggest Sithonia.

Where to stay in Kassandra

  • Kallithea: the liveliest. A long sandy beach, beach bars along the shore and nightclubs just outside the village. The Temple of Ammon Zeus, a Doric sanctuary from the 4th century BC, is nearby.
  • Hanioti and Polychrono: the family resorts. Both have long sandy beaches with sunbeds, water sports and tavernas. Hanioti has pedestrian streets and parks; Polychrono's beach runs along the whole village.
  • Kriopigi: a village on a pine-covered hill above the Toroneos Gulf. You walk down through the trees to a shaded beach.
  • Afytos: an old stone village on a cliff above the sea, and the quiet option on the east coast. Park outside the village centre and walk in.
  • Pefkochori: the biggest beach resort in the south, with a promenade of beach bars, restaurants and nightlife. The Glarokavos lagoon is a short drive away.
  • Sani and Possidi: Sani has a marina and a resort of the same name; Possidi is a cape on the west coast with a lighthouse and a long beach.
  • Paliouri: the southern tip, with pine woods that reach the sea.
  • Nea Skioni: a fishing port with fish tavernas along the harbour.

The best beaches in Kassandra

The east coast is one long sandy strip on the Toroneos Gulf: Hanioti and Polychrono for families, Kriopigi for pines down to the sand, and Afytos below its cliff. On the west coast, Possidi has a sandbar that runs out towards the lighthouse. In the south, Pefkochori has the Glarokavos lagoon nearby and Paliouri has Chrousso, a beach of golden sand with pines behind it, and the two small bays at Agios Nikolaos.

The Greek Blue Flag list for 2025 has 32 beaches in the Municipality of Kassandra, including sections at Kallithea, Kriopigi, Polychrono, Hanioti, Pefkochori, Possidi, Afytos and Sani. Flags are awarded again each year.

Getting there

From Kassandra to the villas

Kassandra has no airport of its own. You fly into Thessaloniki (SKG) and drive south; no ferry is needed. It is the closest of the three legs to the airport, and you reach it by crossing the canal at Nea Potidea.

By car

The main road runs from the airport to Nea Moudania and on to the canal at Nea Potidea. Just past the canal the road splits: one road follows the east coast through Kallithea, Kriopigi, Hanioti and Pefkochori, the other follows the west coast through Siviri and Fourka, and the two meet again at Paliouri in the south, so you can drive a full loop of the peninsula.

Typical drive times from the airport, without traffic: Nea Moudania about 45 minutes, Sani about 55 minutes, Siviri about 1 hour, Kallithea about 1 hour 5, and Pefkochori and Hanioti about 1 hour 10. On Friday and Sunday afternoons in July and August, allow extra time around Nea Moudania and the canal.

Private transfer

We can book a private transfer from the airport to your villa or hotel, with child seats on request. Prices for each village are in the table below.

By bus

There is no direct bus from the airport to Kassandra. Buses to the villages leave from the KTEL Chalkidikis station on the south-eastern edge of Thessaloniki. From the airport, take bus 01X to Aristotelous Square in the city centre, then city bus 45 to the KTEL station. Fares to the villages are around 8 to 12 euros, depending on how far south you go. Check times and prices with KTEL Chalkidikis before you travel.

Private transfer prices per vehicle with Thessaloniki Airport Transfers, tolls and VAT included. Times are from the airport in normal traffic.

Good to know

Kassandra: questions guests ask

For families with small children we usually suggest Sithonia: it is less busy, there is less traffic, the villages are quieter and prices are usually better. Kassandra works if you want organised sandy beaches, such as Hanioti or Polychrono, with tavernas and shops a short walk away. Tell us the ages of the children and we will suggest a village.
