Villas near Ouranoupoli

Ouranoupoli (also written Ouranoupolis) is the last village before the border of Mount Athos, and it lives from that: the boats that carry pilgrims to the monasteries leave from its harbour every morning, the cruises that show everyone else the monasteries from the sea leave an hour later, and the Byzantine tower of Prosphori stands on the beach in the middle of it all. Around the harbour are tavernas on the water, shops selling monastery honey and icons, and a sandy beach that runs north along the coast.

The village beach is organised and sheltered; the coast beyond it, towards Nea Roda, has small sandy coves reached by short tracks, and the Drenia islets just offshore are a boat ride away for a day of swimming. Ammouliani island, with the best beaches on this coast, is fifteen minutes by ferry from Tripiti, ten minutes up the road. Ierissos and its long beach are twenty minutes.
