Villas in Nea Roda
A village on the line of the Xerxes canal, between two seas.
Nea Roda sits on the narrowest point of the Athos peninsula, where Xerxes had a canal dug for his fleet in 480 BC, and it has a beach on each side of the isthmus: a sheltered sandy one on the gulf of Ierissos in front of the village, with a small harbour and tavernas, and the calm western coast at Tripiti, a ten-minute walk over the neck of land, where the ferry to Ammouliani leaves. The village was founded by refugees from the island of Marmara and is quiet, low and friendly.
The village beach is shallow and organised, good for children on any wind; Tripiti’s side has open sand and the islands in view. Ammouliani, fifteen minutes by ferry, has the best beaches on the Athos coast, Alykes and Megali Ammos. Ierissos with its market is ten minutes, Ouranoupoli and the boats ten the other way.
Villas are in the village and on the isthmus between the two coasts. Thessaloniki airport is an hour and a half. Nea Roda suits families who want two sheltered beaches and the island a ferry ride away. Ask us for a shortlist with your dates.
