Hotels in Ierissos
The Athos coast's long sandy beach and working fishing harbour.
Ierissos is the town of the Athos coast: a fishing port, a shipyard that still builds wooden boats, a long beach of sand that runs for kilometres along the gulf, and the shops, banks and market of a place people live in all year. It was rebuilt on the plain after the earthquake of 1932 and the old town is a hill of ruins above it; the ancient city of Akanthos lies under the olive trees beside the beach.
The beach is the longest on the peninsula, organised in front of the town with sunbeds and beach bars and empty for kilometres to the north; the water is clear, and the east wind can bring waves on some afternoons. The harbour has fish tavernas, the Saturday market is the best on this coast, and the summer festival fills the square in July. Nea Roda is ten minutes, Ouranoupoli twenty, the ferry to Ammouliani fifteen.
Villas are on the edge of town and along the coast north of it. Thessaloniki airport is an hour and a half. Ierissos suits families who want a real town, a big beach and low prices. Ask us for a shortlist with your dates.
